When I was young, I was amazed that a bank was willing to pay me to ‘hold’ my money. In my mind, I was making money while going to school, playing football or baseball, or hanging out with my friends. Making money without working! This naïve start sparked my personal financial planning passion that has carried me throughout my life.
My career, however, took me in a different direction. I studied chemical engineering at Iowa State University and followed with a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. I was hired by Union Carbide, now part of Dow Chemical, and worked there for over 26 years. On day one, I was overwhelmed by the diversity of options and investment opportunities. I felt I needed to make immediate decisions with long-term consequences. Finance was not part of my engineering curricula. I was unprepared to make critical financial decisions. I learned through several mistakes, further self-education, and direct application. These lessons helped me recognize the importance of financial expertise. However, when I surveyed financial advisors I found their knowledge was limited, they sold products instead of services, and charged large assets-under-management fees. I was left to do it myself. I started WittFit Financial, LLC to fill the gap. I provide personal finance education and conflict-free financial services at reasonable fees. I educate, support, and mentor so that my clients’ financial knowledge increases and they are more comfortable with their own decisions and goals. This allows my clients peace-of-mind to enjoy their hobbies and comfort in knowing they are fully part of the decision process.
